Bergen

Sat 16 May, 2009

Have you checked out the interactive map? Do you know where we are now? Bergen is a small city nestled by the mountains on one side, and the fjord on the other. Attached rows of colorful wooden houses are scattered throughout the streets and rise up along the mountain side. It's honestly Charming; and Bustling! All of the restaurants serve outside, there's a fish market, cobblestone streets, shops, parks full of flowers, several ancient cathedrals, yachts stacked three deep, laughter and live music everywhere. Bergen is sort of like a lake-side Cape Cod meets Britain... all nestled within a semi-circle of mountains. You could spend a week or two just going to all of the various museums, an aquarium, and an abundance of things to do out on the islands within the fjord.

As it turns out, this Sunday is Norway's Constitution Day. What a surprise! It's a huge celebration, and apparently Bergen is the place to be. There are a lot of people here, and yet it doesn't feel overly crowded. Combined with the local University students, it makes for one big, widespread, outdoor party. Tomorrow there will be parades with traditional dress and song. That festive feeling is bubbling out wherever you walk, and it sure does help that the weather is perfect.

We've been walking constantly; just soaking it all in...

Would you like to know what we ate for dinner last night? I've really been surprised by my courage, which has been supported by some of you. Left to my own devices I wouldn't have considered it. Stekt hwal m/bacon Flote Kaperssaus = Whale Steak. Can you imagine that? So here's the report: It looked like steak on the outside, inside it was a bit more purple than red. The texture was exactly the same as a beef steak. The taste... well, the taste was obviously NOT gamey... most of the time you just tasted a regular beef flavor. But every-once-in-awhile you got this fish flavor. Needless to say- That's Weird. I think that's why there is sauce under it and pieces of bacon on top. We ate almost all of it. Cross that one off the list.

Why else, you may ask, are we in Bergen? Well, the primary reason is that this is the only location for the Missionaries of Charity in all of Norway. Based on the descriptions of Norway that I have shared so far, can you imagine what type of volunteer/service work we will find here? That will be the subject of tomorrow's post.

At random intervals I hear great big bursts of cheering outside... time to check it out. Hmmm, what's for dinner tonight?

Re: Bergen

The presentation of your whale steak dinner certainly made it look inviting. I should have ordered that instead of this cheeseburger.

Re: Bergen

Debra,

Beautiful Sytende Mai.....Independance Day.  Traditional Dress and music and dance.

If the taste of traditional food is intense, especially with salted or fermented shark, cod,.....they usually chase it with Aquavit................for Sytende Mai (seventeenth of may) they usually have excellent "crawfish" feasts everywhere.  Enjoy!  Jeg elske deg.

Re: Bergen

The veggies in our dinner was scrumptious but I am not too sure about the steak...I will skip that and go for the dessert. Where have we been staying? are our living quarters ok? cant wait to see what we will be doing at the missionaries.

Re: Bergen

Whale steak definitely was better than mutton & cabbage! But what about desserts, chocolates and cheese?!?

Re: Bergen

So what about those Norwegian Desserts????

Re: Bergen

Deb,
I just love travelling with you.  This is saving me thousands in vacation funds.  Can't wait to see tomorrow's installments.

Safe journey and blessings.

Re: Bergen

Hey Everybody, thanks for coming to Bergen with me.  So far we've had ice cream everyday- not for me of course, I do it just for YOU.  We can also cross off Aquavit, which tasted like Caraway seed Liquor...  just once to toast the National day yesterday.  Currently we are staying in a very nice YMCA hostel to save some funds for the next leg of our journey which is quite expensive.  Sort of balancing things out.  In general Norwegian prices are minimally 2X more than the USA, or more. Would you pay $8-12 dollars for a burger at McDonalds?... they do! So there are more pictures coming but the internet is so slow at my current location it is hard, or impossible to upload.  Stay tuned... I've enjoyed reading each of your comments Smile

Re: Bergen

I think they pay $8-12 for McDonalds burgers because of all of the whale, herring, lutefisk salt cod.....I think real "beef" is expensive....
Thank you for living my dream.
Anyone tell you about the tradition with the "spoons"? Jeg elske deg.

Re: Bergen

Hey Deb, Staying at the YMCA hostel is a good experience, but don't you skimp too much on your trip. The Seven Stars will be waiting!

Re: Bergen

I've got the Lutefisk salt cod on my short list... wish me luck!!  I'm so glad you've come along and can give us all such culinary expertise. OH, and I did have the cloudberries Smile
I forgot about the spoons... is that where we put them on our noses Wink

Re: Bergen

Deb,
Seems to me that you used Karen's drink in the dinner photo. If I didn't know any better I'd say that is a Guinness disquised in a Bulmer's glass.  Bergen looks like many seaside towns we know in Ireland.  Is Karen getting homesick?  We'll have to go back there on our next adventure.
Joy
PS  I love traveling with you.

Re: Bergen

Hi Joy, Nice to finally write with you.  Even though I'm in Norway, I absolutely could not resist having a Murphys.  Most often Guinness is easier to find if I get the itch.  It was Grand!  And I totally agree with you. I'm I big fan of the fairest island in the whole world... and Bergen is similar, but bigger, much more expensive, and more fjord-like than coastal.  As I will be boarding a ship tonight I'm excited to see if we ever find any crashing waves. We'll just have to find out together....

Re: Bergen

Hey,
really great travel blog! I enjoy reading it.
Do you remember the name of the restaurant where you ate whale steak? And the cost? Was it expensive?

Stekt lwal - where did you get this spelling from? lwal is not a word.. I think you meant "hval" (which means whale).

Re: Bergen

Hi,  thanks for picking up on the miss-spelling.  It's great to have an authentic editor Smile I hope you enjoy the rest of the journey and consider subscribing so that you don't miss Atlantis in January.

About the restaurant, it was Pingvinen, located at Vaskerelven 14.  I really liked their food and went twice. The prices were also quite reasonable.  Here are a few photos from Pingvinen:

Re: Bergen

Hehe, great! Maybe I'll go there one day.
I see from the sign how it's easy to read that as lwal Smile
