Changes

Sat 23 May, 2009

This is a brief post today just to update you on our changes.

Today we will disembark the voyage portion of our journey and spend some time in Tromso. We are now well into the Northern part of Norway and there is no longer any darkness at any time. It's strange how that affects the routine. I tend to get part of my sleep in the afternoon and the rest comes usually between 2 AM to 7.

The snow that can be seen on the tops of mountains has started to creep down. It's still not on the ground mind you... but it's getting closer. Oddly it doesn't feel particularly cold, just chilly. Of course that is helped by the fact that we have had fabulous weather and very little rain. I have no problem at all receiving THAT Blessing.

To date we've really been enjoying the sights and beauty of Norway. But now our focus is going to shift slightly. Personally I'd like to explore the critters of this land, and it's indigenous residents... let's dig in a bit. Up here in the north we will find the Sami culture, and hopefully some opportunities to see the natural habitat of these shores.

PS... today I had myself all fortified to try that herring. At breakfast they have 5 varieties of sauce that they float around in. Sorry Rhonda... I just couldn't do it. Maybe next time Smile

Re: Changes

Good morning!
Funny that today's post is entitled "Changes" when you're at the point in our trip where the sunlit day never changes... get it... to the unlit day. :-) (that's a little humor correspondent humor - hope you're smiling)

P.S. I bet if you wrote the word herring on a piece of paper, held it up to a mirror and read it backwards it would say LINGONBERRY.

Oh give 'em a try. Curious minds want to know.  Enjoy your day!

Re: Changes

pancakes..thats whats good for breakfast, or lunch or dinner..depending on what time it appears to be..this no sunset thing messes up my eating habits!

Re: Changes

OK, so we all know that Alison is the grandfathered IN food correspondent from way back and she actually has her atennae right on this one.  The Norwegians eat pancakes (thin crepe ones) or especially waffles with any meal. There is actually a waffle maker in the lounge room of this very hotel in Tromso. (thin ones, not Belgian... cus we're in Norway, not Belgium).  And you can make one anytime you like. How cool is that! No syrup, they use jelly and fold it over... yum!
The herring in all those different sauces makes me feel sick though.  But just to prove I'm a trooper I'll try one bite tomorrow for Jean. One of them is actually purplish in color and "could" be some sort of berry Sad I think you want me to do it just to have a chuckle!

Re: Changes

Herring is no good.. eww.. you can safely skip that!
But waffles mm! Did you try a cold waffle with brown cheese? That's  That's yummy.

Re: Changes

LOVED the waffles, but only ate them with jam or jelly... good comfort food
